Suns that Set in the East

In a sailboat
built for one
and a small one at that
sits a boy
traveling East

he searches for a sunset
he will not find

he has not yet learned the meaning
of hurry
he has not yet learned the meaning
of time

the open ocean lays before him
he feels no fear
the map unfurls before his hungry eyes
calling a siren’s call
the wind whispers in his ear
telling secrets only he can know

one day
some well-meaning soul
will take him aside
my dear boy
they will say
they will say
suns don’t set in the East
they set in the West

he will look this well-meaning person
square in the eye
and say
the one I am looking for
does not
