No Place

Here is a poem I wrote back in Dec or Jan. I shied away from posting it then. But Jeff Goins has challenged me to pick a fight as part of his Intentional Blogging challenge. (Read more about the assignment here.) So I've decided to pick a fight in poem form.

This city is no place to raise a baby
with towers falling
women stolen
and no faith that the man next to you
isn't really trying to remove the contents
of your wallet
and yet...

let's take ourselves
and our precious things
our photo albums
and grandmother's china
get out of this place
and yet..

this planet is no place to raise a baby
with bombs falling
women stolen
and no faith that the man next to you
isn't really beheading Christians
or stabbing Jews
or shooting Muslims

with no faith in the man next to you
you cross the street
cross the city
cross the country
and wonder if there is a safe place in this world

and yet
I am a woman
with child potential in my womb
who looks into a child's innocent, trusting eyes
eyes that have total faith

and wonder
has no child ever looked at any woman like this before?
has no mother looked into their infant's eyes?

when given that faith
there is no more space for hate
love for this child rules out any hate
I could ever feel for you.

This poem was inspired by the current events of our time which are so easy to forget in our day to day lives. That as our sons and daughters are held safe in our arms someone else's sons and daughters are being sent out to fight a war of hatred.
